I believe that my local arcade has the R16 patch (there is an R16 right?), can you play edits on it? I asked the guy who works on the machines if he could turn on the option and he checked out the machine and said that there is no option for edits. But that there is an option to have read USB always on or something. Hmm?

Remember to get R21 and not R23. R23 has the stupid patch fix.

Wait, are you talking about custom songs or ITG1/ITG2 edits? Because custom songs won't work, but edited steps for ITG1/ITG2 songs will.

I don't remember edits needing to be enabled.

Thanks for that information. I was/am talking about editing songs, not putting/playing custom songs. Another one of my local arcades has the R23, I guess they're smart.

Go down to that arcade and doggy slap them, R23 is not smart, it's stupid. Now violently protest for a downgrade, everyone knows that always works! E15.gif laugh.gif

Tell the people with the R16 to upgrade it to R21.

I meant smart as in they don't want to lose money, or have people playing songs that are really long. Hah. I personally think that they're stupid. E1.gif

"Tell the people with the R16 to upgrade it to R21."

I don't see that happening but it's worth a shot.

Uh...yeah, it is smart. Playing long 6 minute songs = less money therefore if you want to whore custom songs, you have to do so with songs less than 2:30 (?).

Um... no it's not smart. That whole "less money" thing only works if there is a constant line for ITG and no line for any other games. And outside of the really big ITG communities (and sometimes even there), that is just not the case. Besides, for every one douchebag that wants to play a six minute song (and I should point out that the arcade manager could make a rule against it as the ones around here have done), there are a great deal of people that want to play a song that's just a few seconds over the limit.

If it's a few seconds over the limit, you could probably edit the music without ruining it.

Not to sound like an buttocks or anything, but yes, six minute songs would hurt the income of the arcade, as less money is being pulled over for the amount of time played.

Look. The majority of arcades are open for twelve hours at least (generally, 10 to 10 or some such deal). TWELVE HOURS. 6 minutes is NOT a significant impact on their income.

Let me put it this way: if a person plays a fighting game and gets through it without being interrupted, that usually takes about 20 minutes (varies from game to game). For reference purposes, an average ITG/DDR session takes less than half of that time and tends to cost twice as much on average. That doesn't mean that fighting games are unprofitable. Even factoring the ability for somone to put more money into the machine by challenging someone else, that's not a viable argument. Why? Because shooters and brawlers are the same way. A guy that can 1-credit a decent arcade shooter can get nearly 30 minutes to even as much as an hour of playtime from one or two quarters if they play their cards right. Even the 9-song World Tour Challenge course (Extreme, not Supernova) can be completed in around 15 minutes. How do you account for that?

You see, if you criticize someone for playing a long song on ITG, you'll have to make it equally disallowable for someone to play an exceptionally long course on DDR. Every DDR arcade game since Max has featured Oni courses with eight or more songs, which can be double or even TRIPLE the amount of playing time for a normal playthrough. And all for the same cost as a normal run.

Ultimately, the arcade business isn't profitable anyway. As such, you're not going to have people waiting to play ITG around the clock. Everyone will get their turn. They'll play some songs, they'll leave. The impact of someone playing a set of songs that's longer than someone else's is absolutely minimal in terms of its economic impact.

Well actually around here on the weekends there's never a time where there's no one on the machine. So, playing for 15 minutes a game is certainly going to piss people off, and make them leave since they can't get turns to play. They aren't just losing $1.00 they're losing $20.00 which would have been from their entire day there.

Plus, at tourist attractions, if lots of people are wanting to play, and you're just playing One Winged Angel three times in a row, it's going to turn unpatient people off from playing.

Yeah, it really is kind of smart to have R23. That way you can still have customs, but not whore songs that take up too much time.

Having R23 would be dumb. The arcade would lose money if there was any competition at all.

It would detract all the hardcore ITG players from going to the location.

If my arcade got R23, I would and about 10 other ITGers would switch to another arcade that has R21.

So yes, R23 would make you lose money in most circumstances.

If we're concedng that people will leave over waiting too long, we must also concede that people will leave because the songs they want to play are 10 seconds too long.

And you still haven't told me what's keeping the management from making a rule against people playing excessively long songs.

I was about to post this exact thought while scrolling down the page until I found this. Either way you would lose money. You would lose money to the less hardcore group with R21, and you would lose money to the more hardcore group with R23, honestly, I'd rather have the hardcore group who comes to my arcade every few days be happy and pump poopy of cash into my machine. Also, everyone knows 6 minute OWA like edits are all the rage these days! E13.gif laugh.gif

So go when there's nobody waiting to play Pulse or One Winged Angel.
