Breakdancing is still dancing. Bboys more or less look down on other bboys that do only tricks. They don't pace around, do a trick, and repeat. They dance to the MUSIC. That's what I've seen in many Korean PIU vids. Good dancing, and optional tricks. It's just too bad most other parts of the world watch those vids, and the only part they imitate are the stunts.
And just to toot my own horn, I do believe I can beat Smidget when it comes to freestyling. I might get hell for this, but it's my opinion. He doesn't do much in between the tricks besides simple shuffling of the feet and swinging of the arms.

Take two similar routines. They both have more or less the same power/stunts/tricks in their routine. But one dances better than the other. Who wins?
Or...
Take two routines. One has a player playing the game normally except for the points at which he throws in power/stunts/tricks. The other player just dances throughout the routine, facing the audience and making a show of it.
The Korean approach to bboying was similar for a number of years, but it has been changing recently. Before they were the powerheads of the world, but they've moved on to a new focus: style. There are still Korean powerheads, but they never win any solo competitions. Style is the most important thing. Style in how you dance, style in how power is used...etc. _________________

Okay.... let's see if I can manage this in order here:
Houou: Honestly, I don't know the name of the guy either, since I probably saw the same video you did, and yes, most of the routine is taken from that, and I've admitted that publicly. Some of the people who were there had seen the video beforehand, some hadn't. And as far as the "point" goes: Freestyle is about entertainment. This was less of a dance freestyle and more comedy, where instead of dance moves being designed to fit the arrows, less emphasis was put on the lower-body movement and more on the upper body. It's also a bit of a change from the regular comedic freestyles around here, which tend more toward general goofiness, usually. I still need to see all of the video to see just how much of the smaller things were and weren't visible, though. And as far as why I did it? Other than liking the mime routine and realizing the same song (albeit a little faster) was in ITG? To show that you can take inspirations from just about anything for a routine, not just dance videos or previous freestyle vids. Plus, I've tended more toward performance rather than dance in general, so this fit well for my style.
Hydra: That was the first part. When I sat down on the pad, first off it was one long freeze arrow. I lip-sync'ed the line "What's going on??" while looking confused also. However, while this was happening, on the screen, I had spelled out "WTF?" in mines going across the other 7 lines. That was one of the things that I found interesting: That this might've been the first freestyle where the proper choice of speed mod was important. Too fast and it's a blur, too slow and it's a blob. Also, after I walked off the pad shortly after that, the "horribly done Kool-Aid man" made an appearance (of course, right after the line "Oh yeah!"). When you've only got 8 pixels of width to work with, you can't make the Mona Lisa, and this thing was baaaaaaad: It looked like a deformed smiley with a lip on the top right. But I kept it in there for the heck of it.
Wendell: Music Pleeze is a great selection. Kid Beast did a pretty damn good improv to that at CotC. I'm going to add to Kyrandian's choices with My Life Is So Crazy and Ride The Bass. Or, if you want to do it the easy way: Anything from DJ Zombie/Kid Whatever for the most part. :-P Robotix is fun, but I dunno how you'd be able to work through that speedup/siren in the middle.
Jing: OMG I didn't expect to see you around here! So will I be seeing you at DigitalLife this year for the new and improved FS tourney? _________________

Jing, I totally agree with you on the whole style thing. It's the truth, everthing is about style, even the power moves.
Are you going to nationals for PIU? _________________
