1) What is your name?

Reenee

2) How old are you?

18

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?

Since August 2003; friend had a copy of MAX1 US and a 3rd party mat. I got tired of playing Phantasy Star Online for two and a half years (probably logged more than 5000 hours of play) over the Dreamcast/Gamecube lifespan.

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?

I'd only spend about $10-$15, but only if the arcade has many songs for cheap (3-4 songs for 50-75 cents). I don't go to the arcades much anyways, so I just try to show off at DDR "stations" set up at electronic stores like Fry's.

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?

The fact that Konami Tokyo isn't giving the game as much respect as it should like in Japan or Konami Hawai'i. It needs more songs and online play.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?

Slightly longer songs, add intermediate Challenge courses (all of the Oni courses in the game are really easy or really hard), add the hidden modifiers in, crossover with other Bemani games more often, online capabilities, Challenge steps for every song.

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?

Fun, excersise, showing off, and wanting a challenge for myself and against others.

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?

Simple concept that's complicated. Also the sight of players doing really well.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?

Norway has it as a sport, so why not?

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR

Just water, but I'll take anything that'll replenish my stamina.

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?

I have these lightweight slipper-like shoes with a rubber bottom. They're easy on me and the pad.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?

Home, 'cause I can't drive yet.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?

I'd rather prefer I get more time to play it.

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?

PAing. I'm not ready for freestyles, and I probably will never be.

13)If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?

Yes.

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?

-Second time I ever played at an arcade, there was this group of teens with their tagalong little kid or something, but the stupid kid didn't stay messing around with THEM, so he tried to purposely change my difficulty and I yelled at him to stop annoying everybody, which he did.

-The other time some moron clapped to Rhythm and Police.

-This little girl wouldn't get off the pad, and she kept asking me questions while I was playing.

15) What Effect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?

15b) What do you think caused the Effect(s)?

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?

16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?

16d) How much did the repairs cost?

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?

I own DDRMAX2 US, and DDR EXTREME US. I have a third-party metal pad from eBay which is surprisingly working well.

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?

No.

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)

Not really. It's not the "in" thing but when it gets attention, it gets attention.

20) What did DDR originate from?

This question causes brain farts and should be pulled from this questionaire.

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?

No. Lost my footing off the pad once though.

1) What is your name?
Nichole J.

2) How old are you?
15

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?
Been playing for 4 months after seeing people playing it at the arcade. I got the home version for my birthday and have been addicted ever since.

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?
About $10-$15 a week

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?
I like the fact that it makes exercising alot more fun and constantly gets you to push your physical and mental limits in order to succeed. What I don't like are people who do nothing but criticize your style of play.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?
More songs from the Japanese version. Come on Konami, hook us up!

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?
It started off as for fun and to get in shape, but as I am progressing I want to be able to do fairly well and maybe win a few tournaments.

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?
You mean what draws people to it? I guess the music and perhaps the oddity of the concept.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?
If cheerleading is a sport, I don't see why DDR can't become one.

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?
I think it would be great for people to meet other serious DDRists

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR
Water or a very big bottle of Powerade

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?
I like Converse high tops because they're really flexible. Other than that, just plain jeans and a t-shirt

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?
The Recreation Station because the machines usually aren't crowded and the people are pretty cool

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?
Sometime in the afternoon when it is still a bit warmer

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?
Perfect Attack because I'm a perfectionist so it comes easy to me. I would like to try freestyling in the future but I have very little coordination.

13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of veterans?
If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?
Most of the newer players are pretty cool. As long as they're not being arrogent or antagonistic they're fine with me.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?
Not yet

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?
n/a

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?
Mostly just kids who randomly jump on or run across the mat while I'm playing.

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?
annoyed me slightly but I just ignored it.

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?
Definitely gets more people in there and trying it for themselves.

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?
Seeing people who have a high degree of skill in an area makes them want to get that good themselves I guess.

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?
When something makes that much money, arcades catch on pretty quick happy.gif

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?
About a week ago probably because the Recreation Station is a place where alot of younger kids have birthday parties. Putting in a DDR machine would attract a higher age level.

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?
DDRMax 2 and Dance Dance Revolution Extreme

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?
I wish I had one...

16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?
n/a

16d) How much did the repairs cost?
n/a

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?
Cobalt Flux because even though I have not owned one myself, my friend does and he's had it for about two years now.

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?
Once 2 days after I started playing. I was by no means ready, even for Light mode, but I figured it was good for me to get some experience while i was still new. I got some tips from the better players and nobody laughed after a failed my song.

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?
A local DDR/game club I go to at my library

17c) How are tournaments started?
If the manager can find enough people interested, he'll have one from time to time.

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?
Most tournaments I've heard of are PA, meaning whoever scores the most Perfects wins.

17e) How do you score freestyle play?
On originality and performance I assume.

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?
Most of the time the library staff isn't happy when we host a tournament.

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)
No, because trends tend to go away as quickly as they came. DDR has been around for 4 years I think, and I think it will be popular for a long time.

20) What did DDR originate from?

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?
Sprained my ankle after falling off the pad while doing gallop steps. It put me out for a little but nothing really serious.

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?
I would encourage anyone to begin playing the game, even if they aren't good at first (nobody is). Keep working at it and it will all pay off.

Great idea Slayer, be sure to post your report when you're done. Gambatte!!

1) What is your name?

K.C. L.

2) How old are you?

All of 14 1/2

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?

I've been playing for a good 2-3 years now, and my older brother introduced DDR to me through a imported 4th Mix disc for the Playstation.

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?

Well, I usually go to the arcade on the weekends, but normally I would play at home, so I would guess at around 5-10 dollars.

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?

Goodness, I hate it when people bother me while I'm playing, or ask really stupid questions.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?

n/a

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?

I play for the fun of it-*cough*-okay, I play MOSTLY for the fun of it, but it's always nice to show off a little. riiight.gif

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?

I think the main draws of DDR is the overall difference it is from normal arcade and video games. You know, like how video games are usually classified with button-pushing people staring at the screen without moving any muscles besides the ones in their fingers? Well, DDR is much different that that, obviously.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?

Isn't it already classified as a sport in Norway? laugh.gif

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?

I think it would be a great idea, a DDR league could be a great way for players to get together, and it could be like an English version of the Internet Ranking thingy...

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?

Water, or orange soda, I guess. ICEE's are the best, as they cool me down, but they can give me indigestion if I drink them WHILE I'm playing.

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?

I would usually try to wear shorts and just a T-shirt, otherwise, not really. My shoes are the slip-on dealies, if that makes a difference.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?

I usually play DDR at The Lost City in Michigan. I play there because ever since the second DDR location that I went to (Kahunaville) closed, The Lost City is the ONLY place where I can play DDR at the arcades.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?

During the afternoon, because there are generally more people around ( riiight.gif ) and that's when I'm usually not doing something else.

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?

I'm more a technical (trying to get the highest score, in other words yes, Perfect Attacking) player, really-no, scratch that, I'm solely a tech player.

13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of veterans? If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?

Definitely veteran here. My opinion of the new players is that most of them give up too easily. It makes me very happy when I see little kids trying out the game, because for all I know, this kid might be the next Yasu (god of DDR, pretty much). When I see new players, I generally think of them as "the new wave". (A term that will be recognized by those who watch Hikaru no Go)

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?

Not yet, thankfully.

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?

---

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?

Oh yes. My goodness.

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?

I once ran into a group of kids slightly younger than I was, around 12 or 13, that were bothering people playing on the local DDR machine and generally being rough on the machine, stomping extra-hard on the pads and whatnot? I had to go to the arcade manager and complain (trust me, I wasn't the only one) to get those kids kicked out.

15) What effect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?

I think it's drawn plenty of attention away from other games, because it's something different and interesting. (I won't say new, because DDR's been around for QUITE a while.)

15b) What do you think caused the effect(s)?

I think just the general appearence of the machines, and the pure concept of a dancing game is new to most people, therefore it should be very interesting to them.

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?

Word-of-mouth.

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?

I'm not sure exactly, I only moved to Michigan about a year or so ago, and the machine was there already, so honestly, I don't know.

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?

Yes, yes I do. I own imports of DDR 3rd, 4th, and 5th Mix, and I also own the English versions of DDR Max 2, and DDR Extreme.

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?

No, I have a Red Octane Ignition pad.

16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?

---

16d) How much did the repairs cost?

---

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?

Cobalt Flux. Good quality pads, if not a bit expensive.

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?

Yes. Once. It was pretty chaotic, as it was the first tournament that the arcade managers had ever staged, and the torunament went WAY over time.

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?

At arcades?

17c) How are tournaments started?

Well, I suppose someone comes up with the idea, and goes and asks an arcade manager about it, to see if they can use their machine.

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?

General rules? I think it's hard to say what those are, because all of the rules vary between arcades.

17e) How do you score freestyle play?

I do not attempt, nor score, freestyle play.

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?

I would think that arcade owners would encourage tournaments, because it brings them publicity that other tournaments may not bring.

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?

Yes, of course. There are many different foods, trends, toys, games, and activities in America that were brought over from foreign countries.

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)

I would not consider DDR as a trend, but rather as a cult classic. DDR is only played seriously by a select following, and however this may change in the future, that is the current state of it.

20) What did DDR originate from?

... Japan?

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?

Yup. Quite a few times, but the most memorable and funny one was when I fell off the side of the pad at the arcade while doing gallops, which is two steps quickly done one after the other, which gives the impression of a gallop.

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?

DDR isn't very popular right now, but it definitely has the potential to be.

1) What is your name?
Kodi

2) How old are you?
18

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?
4 months ago in an arcade

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?
Usually $10-20

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?
I like the exercise and the fact that you gradually get better. I hate the perfectionists that enjoy making fun of others for not doing things as great as they do.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?
Nothing

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?
Exercise mainly

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?
Opportunity to improve. There's a goal before every song, to get a certain grade or higher. If you don't meet it you can always try again.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?
No.

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?
They're hard to get people organised for.

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?
Nope. Anything liquid.

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?
Nope. As long as they aren't dress shoes, they're too heavy.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?
The arcade because I enjoy the attention of the crowd.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?
About 5:00 because that's when the arcade becomes packed.

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?
Perfect Attack. I still can't get those 10-footers. Until I can get that I'm not going to try freestyle happy.gif.

13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of veterans?
If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?
I don't consider myself a newbie, but not great enough to be a veteran. I myself encourage the newbies to play songs that they may not have heard before or are a little harder than what they're doing to see if they really like it and also so they could get a sense of accomplishment if they pass. The veterans that I'm usually around are arrogant and let people know they're better, though some are pretty nice.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?
No.

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?
N/A

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?
Yes

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?
Started yelling at the people who wanted to play after me for critiquing my performance, though not really constructive criticism. Wasn't resolved.

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?
Makes people scared to play some games.

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?
People get tired after games of DDR and they like to lean on things. I've noticed that a lot of people who play at arcades are pretty shy and are too scared to ask the person to get off of the machine.

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?
Money.

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?
Came with the arcade. It's pretty ratty though.

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?
Yes, DDRMax2

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?
No, ordering.

16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?
N/A.

16d) How much did the repairs cost?
N/A.

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?
Cobalt Flux. They stand by their products.

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?
No

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?
Areas with a dense population. I haven't heard of any in Seattle though...

17c) How are tournaments started?
Idk, never started one. Assuming word of mouth and these forums.

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?
N/A

17e) How do you score freestyle play?
N/A

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?
Encourage here. Owners are trying to pull one together.

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?
Everybody assumes the linky Asian guy is always going to be the victor.

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)
No. Most people I know hate DDR. It has more of a cult following.

20) What did DDR originate from?
Not Japanese happy.gif

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?
No.

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?

1) What is your name?
Luke Brown
2) How old are you?
19
3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?
About a year and a half now I believe. I tried it first at the Gameworks in Grapevine Mills mall, third mix I believe, and didn't like it then.
4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?
About $20.
5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?
Good exercise. Improves balance and coordination and ability to spot things quicker. Helps with my martial arts by helping that stuff. Don't really like the flashing lights at the top of the machines.
6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?
Solo would only effect one side so I wouldn't have to use it when someone else does. Would also make it to where if you hold the bar for more than three seconds it won't let you get perfects. Remove beginner mode.
7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?
Mostly entertainment as I workout everyday anyway. I really like the music and it's more challenging to me than any other game.
8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?
Going to assume drawbacks. New mixes missing songs from older mixes.
9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?
Nope.
9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?
That'd be cool.
10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?
I prefer to have a banana a little before playing. Great natural energy.
10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?
I wear my running gear. Shorts, boxer-briefs, and running shoes. Random shirt.
11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?
Main Event in Grapevine, TX. I like the crowds I can get there and I know a lot of the people that work there so I can get deals on game cards sometimes.
12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?
7:00pm-9:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Best time for crowds.
12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?
I try to do PA, but without the flat footed frozen upper body thing. Just because I think it looks cool and it's more fun to move a little more. Uses some more energy though.
13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of veterans?
If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?
They need to listen more. Everyone always stays on the middle after they watch me play and I tell them not to do that.
14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?
Not I.
14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?
Yes indeed.
14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?
Occasionally someone who can't play at my level will shadow me and their stomping sounds will throw me off. That's usually remedied easy enough though. Sometimes people watching will make stupid remarks or try and mess me up. I get the "DDR is gay" thing quite a bit, usually not to my face though. Rarely someone will hop on the pad beside me and just flail around for a second or dash in front of the screen. That's really rare though cause I'm apparently kind of intimidating to most people. I'm a nice guy though!
15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?
It's brought in a whole new way to play games. More gamers exercising.
15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?
The usage of your whole body to play (counting freestyle).
15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?
Was a totally new thing. Most people hadn't thought of dancing/lots of movement as a game.
15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?
Like two years ago, when I lived in Longview, they got a machine. It was a really popular game so they got one. They got a really messed up machine though.
16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?
I own the computer version. Not Stepmania, the one you can buy.
16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?
Don't have any.
16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?

16d) How much did the repairs cost?

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?
Cobalt Flux. They're the only ones that I've read about that last. The rest have had issues breaking within 30 minutes of play.
17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?
Was about 15 people there. It was in Tyler, which is in East Texas. DDR isn't a huge deal there. Was pretty cool watching them. I wasn't on a level where I could compete.
17b) Where are tournaments usually held?
Popular places.
17c) How are tournaments started?
Someone asks some people if they would come to a tournament. They let others know and it grows.
17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?
No solo and a few other mods. That's all that's kept the same everywhere as far as I know.
17e) How do you score freestyle play?
Probably like a dance tournament, but you'd also count in their PA.
17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?
They tend to encourage them.
18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?
Not really.
19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)
Nah. It's lasted too long.
20) What did DDR originate from?
Got me.
21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?
Not yet.
22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?
Nope.

1) What is your name?
Louie

2) How old are you?
23

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?
2 years, found it in local arcade.

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?
Used to spend $20+/week, now it's around $5/week

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?
I like the unique challenge it gives.
I don't like the queerness around it.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?
New arcade versions would be nice.

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?
Mostly exercise, since it's the only exercise that doesn't bore me.

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?
"IT'S FROM JAPAN OMG happy.gif " and songs that sound like they should be in clubs

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?
No

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?
It'll only work if there's a lot of people interested

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?
Not really, though I try to eat/drink anything before playing since playing on an empty stomach is never good.

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?
Running shoes, don't care about clothes.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?
It changes every few months. Wherever has DDR with good pads, no matter the price, I play there.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?
Early afternoon in the weekdays, since I have a better chance to get the machine to myself.

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?
Combo of fun and PA. I don't take PA too seriously since it makes the game less fun to play.

13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of veterans?
If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?
Experienced.
Don't care for them. Seems like most only play to showoff now.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)? Yes

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved? I had running shoes that marked the floor. The shoes mucked up the pads and floor around it. Security guy yelled at me for fucking up the floors and the manager promply kicked me out. Never went back since out of embarassment.

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?
Not anymore. I used to get lots of problems from cocky people who were better than me back when I still trying to get a handle of the game.

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?
I just kept reminding myself that it's a game and I'll be better than them someday. I did, and they don't bother me anymore. Anyone who makes fun of me, I just joke around back at them, letting them know I don't take this shit so seriously like most DDR players.

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?
It's a bad effect on mall and little-kid based arcades because you look stupid no matter what while playing in an area around lots of people and some will let you know how moronic you look no matter what.
Everywhere else, it's okay. They seem to adapt to it well.

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?
Bad, probably the fact that more fag players (handslap/kneeplant overused routines, plays same 5 songs over and over) hang out in those places I mentioned and make everyone else who plays it more stupid.

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?
No clue. I think they noticed how much revenue it generated in other arcades and followed suit.

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?
No clue, probably because all the other arcades had it.

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?
US : Konamix, MAX, MAX2, Extreme
Japan : Extreme, Party Collection.

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?
No, too expensive for one game.

*skipping rest of 16*

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?
I've been to 4.
First time was just to see what a DDR tournament was like. I enjoyed it even though I placed very low
Second time was a local one, I didn't even place. Left early, didn't care for the rest of it.
Third time, I placed low again. It was okay.
Fourth time, Placed much higher, but won no prizes. It was a good one as well.

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?
Places with a 100% working DDR machine, which is rare nowadays.

17c) How are tournaments started?
Usually, someone (hopefully) knowledgable about running tournaments tells all the local players about a tournament in 2-3 months. Everyone prepares for it until the day of the tourney.

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?
Step on panels when you see arrows. More perfects = bigger score. Usually, machine score isn't used and a dance point system is used instead to determine the winner.

17e) How do you score freestyle play?
Personally, if it made me laugh the most, it gets 1st place.

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?
No clue, though most don't usually open themselves to such tournaments.

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?
I don't understand what you're asking here.

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)
Yes.
Unless you're nuts for the game, most people play it for 2-3 years, then quit out of boredom from a lack of challenge.

20) What did DDR originate from?
Konami of Japan, last time I checked

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?
Nothing severe, no

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?

[b]1) What is your name?
Hurley

2) How old are you?
20
3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?
Off and on for about 2 years. First introduced in the summer of 2002

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?
30 bucks, only on weekends

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?
PROS: Much more different from other arcade games
CONS: only arcade game I have seen break consistently

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?
the price at most arcades. I could have made a few car payments with all that has been spent over the course of time.

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?
exercise. And that there's not much for one to do in Las Vegas if you're not 21

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?
It has the mechanics of something similar to an Atari game. Not too hard to learn the controls and mechanics. And it has an 'addictive fun' factor that goes along with it

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?
no. It's basically your 100/200/whatever yard dash on a centralized location

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?
hey, the more power to those who want to form it, I wouldn't be able to devote any time into it though

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?
usually Water or Gatorade. Before that I'll usually eat a light sandwich or something, nothing too filling

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?
Normally black clothing or a sports jersey. Sweat doesn't show up very well. The only time it will is if you let it sit for a while, especially in air conditioning and then salt stains show up and doesn't look anywhere near decent. Usually, I play and get the hell out
As for shoes, I believe Skateboarding shoes work best, easy to side around on the pad with while also allowing you enough traction to keep yourself on the pad.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?
I play at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. There's a good amound of people who walk through there every weekend.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?
Evening, the only time I can get there due to work schedule and other plans during the weekend agenda

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?
Freestyle and Stamina attack (not using the bar, doing really hard songs over and over again with as little break in between songs).
Why? No one else does it

13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of veterans?
If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?
I conside myself a veteran, due to longevity. That's the only way if you're a veteran. If you stay playing long enough, not what one does.
In Vegas, there are hardly any regulars, so basically everyone I see is pretty much new. I've tried teaching some people, but due to Vegas' tendency to retain people (or lack therof), I just stopped after a while.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?
I've lived in several different states and I've never had any problems with any of them. I've actually got hooked up for just bring up stuff to them and just being nice.

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?
A little bit with other players

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?
Some players will ask some mindless questions.
Primarilly because I have a much more different (and somewhat careless) playing style. (everyone else Perfect Attacks and uses the bar, and I don't really care to do it). As for what resolved it? Sarcasm

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?
It's kind of on it's own category in an environment where Racing and Fighting games are the dominant genres of arcade gaming

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?
The fact that you can't really stand or sit down on DDR

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?
because people saw it as an interesting solution to exercise and lose weight

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?
No idea, it was always there.

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?
None

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?
There is a local hobby shop that has a PS2 set up and they have a metal pad to use.
The fact that you can't use shoes on them throws me off. I play the hell out of the arcade pads.

16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?
Their metal pad had gone through all sorts of problems. First someone played using shoes and that rattled the living hell out of that. Then the sensorts were going out. And I fixed a wiring problem after the sensorts got installed.
Last time I checked, it was FUBAR

16d) How much did the repairs cost?
Not too sure. Wiring repair was done for free (wire was partially disconnected, not too hard to fix)

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?
couldn't tell you....primarilly because I don't own a PS2

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?
I have gone to one tournament. IT was for Perfect Attack in Arizona. I got my arse handed to me because I don't Perfect Attack. I didn't like it because I like playing the outlandish songs and having my opponent play them when I know they're not good at it.
The tournament format was random capriece. I played nothing I was remotely good at or felt challenged to play

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?
Usually back in my home town of Arizona, as for Vegas. I'd like to know that answer too

17c) How are tournaments started?
When a bunch of people get together and say 'hey! let's all gather up on a Saturday and see who's better doing ___________!'
Vegas lacks commradery

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?
From what I've seen in Arizona, you pick your mods. and the songs are random.

17e) How do you score freestyle play?
If the person passes the song and does something interesting. I'm not a judge, so I can't really say

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?
I know one place in Vegas encourages it (Circus Circus). Everywhere else, I don't know

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?
No

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)
I can't really say, I don't really know much of the DDR community outside the states

20) What did DDR originate from?
Probably from a simple game.

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?
Twisted my ankle several times

1) What is your name?

AJ

2) How old are you?

13

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?

For a year. My friend Linda showed it to me.

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?

probably about 4 bucks, but I also play it at home and our Arcade has the machine set to Joint Premium.

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?

I LOVE how the machine is a great workout and it is really fun, too.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?

How many American songs bemani puts on the us home versions.

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?

Entertainment and something to do when I am not at dance class.

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?

Foot/eye coordination.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?

Oh, it would be really cool if it would, but when have you EVER heard of a video game become a sport?

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?

I think it is a cool idea, kind of a social aspect type of thing.

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?

water/soda every onceand a while.

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?

Tennis shoes. If I wore my regular platform shoes that I got from hot topic, it would be broken ankle city.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?

I usually play at home because it is there or the mall because that is the closest machine around.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?

Nope. Play anyday, everyday, all the time E4.gif

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?

I just play to increase my skills, so would that be concidered pa?

13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of
veterans?

I am kind of in the middle. I concider veterans people I look up to as somewhat of an example.

If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?

As I said, I am in the middle, but I must say that everyone starts somewhere. You never know, that little kid failing butterfly begginner might just become the next local veteran.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?

I only got told to put my shoes on at the arcade. LOL

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?

I put shoes on...

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?

Not except for some dumb questions asked, and one person said I stole their quarter. No big deal.

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?

I just kinda walked away.

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?

It improves people's visions on arcade and how people look at video games. It is a great workout. Kids love it, parents approve it.

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?

We get a lot of crowds at our arcade because the machine is right in front. Veterans make the game look fun. Kids then try it, and go home and tell their parents about it. Then when they get good, the cycle starts over again.

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?

See above.

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?

I have no idea.

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?

I do. I own Max, Max2 and Extreme US.

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?

I do own a metal pad as well. The right arrow goes every once and a while, but all it takes is a screw driver.

16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?

I did it... I fix it every once and a while. Just to tune it up a bit.

16d) How much did the repairs cost?

Free.. unless the screwdriver cost something... disgust.gif

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?

Cobult Flux. I heard those things can get run over by SUV's and still be okay.

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?

I have been to two Joyrides tournaments. I REALLY look forward to them because that is when I get to see all my DDR buddies and get the joys of competition.

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?

I can only make the Joyrides ones evey so often because I am busy for all the other ones I hear about.

17c) How are tournaments started?

Usually someone at the arcade that they work at brings an idea of a tourney to the manager. If accepted, the tournament gets scheduled and advertised. That is how I heard it happens anyway.

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?

Yes they do. The ones I go to usualy are single elimination, perfect attack. No freestyle. But then again that is Joyrides. Some are double elimination. Could involve wild card, Freestyle tournies, and are set my random Caprice.

17e) How do you score freestyle play?

It isn't actually scored but the machine. Generally they are scored with a little bit of humor, accurate steps, and complexity of steps. I don't do much free style so I don't really know.

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?

I depends on the arcade. Some encorage because it brings in money, others discourage because it brings in too many people.

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?

I have seen many Asians and Americans and Hispanics and any other culture usually play together. I have also heard of some CRAZY freestyle done by Asians. Probably because that is where the game originated from.

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)

Sure. Like a trend, DDR spreds and is introduced by others playing.

20) What did DDR originate from?

Like the chicken and the egg, I dunno which came first. Pump or DDR.

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?

Yeah. I fell off the pad and messed up my foot pretty good, but only because of my own mistake.

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?

Nope.. none that I can think of.

1) What is your name?
Andre Segarra

2) How old are you?
19

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?
Been playing for about a year and a half. One of my friends introduced me to DDR, and I decided to try it. Needless to say, I liked it.

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?
When I have money, it's about $30 a week.

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?
I like doing anything that can produce adrenaline (more specifically endorphines), so DDR's always enjoyable. I dislike the fact that people always try to say funny things about it.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?
The fact that Extreme doesn't have enough of the older songs everyone wishes we could play from older mixes.

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?
Entertainment.

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?
Watching others play almost always attracts people. Since I freestyle as well as (kind of) PA, I get an average of 20 people a session watching me for at least one playset of songs. Something like 50 people gathered once when I freestyled the World Tour.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?
It already has, in Norway.

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?
No.

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?
Whatever I can afford, which is usually $3 Chinese.

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?
Nope. I've played in every type of shoe you can imagine a guy wearing (dress shoes, sandals, boots, barefoot, everything), and I've actually passed LoM in Old Navy flip-flops.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?
Carousel Mall in Syracuse, NY. It's the closest location I have and it's cheaper than other arcades in my area.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?
Morning and early afternoon, 'cause then I don't have to wait for kids in lines.

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?
It's kind of been called "TechTyle," 'cause I PA with a lot of freestyling, including on 10s.

13) If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?
I don't really have an opinion about 'em, they're just players. If I feel like it, I'll talk to them. If not, I'll wait for my turn and play when it comes.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?
Haha. Oh, yeah. Freestyling Drop Out Heavy (including jumps) in nothing but a towel and sandals doesn't exactly please arcade staff. Especially on a Saturday night.

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?
I was kicked out and made to change after some guys got an up-towel.

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?
Oh, yeah. Plenty.

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?
--This answer could take an entire post by itself--

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?
DEFINITELY attracts people to the arcades.

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?
The fact that there are, unlike in other games, people moving and using their entire bodies.

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?
Physical activity, especially anything that can make you look like a jackass, is great for viewing. So people started watching and decided they wanted to try, and so on and so forth.

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?
Before I started playing.

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?
Nope. Well, Stepmania.

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?
Yeah, but nothing big. Just 20-person get-togethers and things. Always fun, though.

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?
Local arcade.

17c) How are tournaments started?
Somene goes "I'm organizing a tourney" and everyone else is like "free?" If so, there's a tourney in the making.

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?
Rules...perfect attack (usually), and there's 2 main formats for deciding who wins a PA. First is overall perfects. Each player chooses one song and they do one random song. After all 3 are completed, the player with the most perfects is the winner. The second is a best-of-three with the same manner of choosing songs.

17e) How do you score freestyle play?
Good question.

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?
Depends on when it is. If it's on a Friday or Saturday night, most managers look down on them.

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?
No idea what's going on.

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)
Pretty much. It's a video game, which means it will stop being cool sometime soon. Like everything else.

20) What did DDR originate from?
Pa-Rappa the Rappa? (I hope not)

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?
Haha, no.

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?
Are we there yet?

1) What is your name?

Ally.

2) How old are you?

19.

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?

Umm. At least a year, not including periods I haven't played. I ran into a DDR machine in a movie theatre, and there wasn't anyone around so I jumped on to try it out. We've been together since.

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?

2-4 dollars at least.

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?

It's a really fun game. Minus your usual stuck-up people, and it's hard to find things to not like about it.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?

Maybe the limited song selection. It'd be nice to have a lot to play, especially songs from the older mixes.

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?

For fun. It's a good workout, though.

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?

The way it attracts people. Instead of pressing a few buttons and wiggling a joystick, you can actually see what someone's doing on DDR. I think the fact that it looks easy when it really isn't in some cases makes people drawn to it as well.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?

I doubt it.

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?

A DDR league?

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?

Water. Lots of water.

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?

Sometimes it's fun to dress up a bit, but as long as my clothes are light and comfy, it doesn't matter.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?

I play at home, but there's at least a few arcades nearby if I ever want to play there instead.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?

So long as I'm not playing half-asleep, any time is a great time for DDR.

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?

Not really. I just play to have fun. If there comes a time when I want to play more seriously, PA would be the way to go. . just not now.

13) If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?

I don't really have an opinion. We've all been a new player somewhere along the line. Unless they want to talk to me, it's just another player.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?

Not yet.

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?

Not that I'm aware of. I try and be nice to everyone, so conflicts never occur.

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?

It depends. If people are interested in DDR, it'll usually attract more people. It's also a healthy view of what video games would be like if you could play with your whole body - which is what it is, anyway.

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?

It's kind of a domino effect. If someone plays amazingly well, there's going to be others that will want to play that well, too. So they practice at home or the arcade, and then the same kind of thing continues to happen.

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?

Maybe because, as I said, it's a healthy view of video games. And it's fun.

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?

Anything of that sort happened before I got into DDR, so. .

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?

Yeah. I have Konamix, the old US Playstation version, as well as Max2 for the Ps2.

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?

I don't own any metal pads.

16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?

16d) How much did the repairs cost?

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?

Not yet. I may someday.

17b) Where are tournaments usually held? From what I'm aware of, the well-maintained arcades hold tournaments.

17c) How are tournaments started?

By DDR players, I think.

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?

I have no idea.

17e) How do you score freestyle play?

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?

Um. Considering they probably bring more people to an arcade, they'd want to encourage them.

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?

Not really.

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)

Oh, that depends. Like any video game, there's a loyal fanbase, and fans that will eventually find something "better" to do with their time. So there'll always be players. .

20) What did DDR originate from?

I'm not sure. Maybe just a concept of using your feet to play a game?

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?

Beyond little things, no.

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?

Yeah. Anyone who hasn't played DDR should at least try it a few times. You can't expect to be the best on your first attempt, but like anything else, it'll pay off.

1) What is your name?
Micaela Braithwaite

2) How old are you?
Sixteen And Three Quarters

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?
Since my 16th Birthday (January 11th 2004) I got ddr and a dance pad for my birthday E10.gif

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR? $29.99 (cdn) for 150 tokens at the arcade... but usually its jeff <3 that buys the tokens.

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?
Its a great way to release tension. I love when I'm angry to be able to go to the arcade and stomp the crap out of the dance pad to something like Dead End or So Deep. I don't like how expensive it is to get a decent dance pad for your console system. ><''

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?
Nothing really, I just wish there was more of a DDR community in my town.

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?
Excercise, but mainly because its something I feel I'm good at. People like to be good at something right? I love playing with a few friends. Or competing also biggrin.gif It's great fun, and gives me something to look forward to.

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?
it's more than just a video game, and it brings people together. I find it appeals to all types of people. you find the girls who normally wouldn't play a motorcycle racing game, giggling and tripping over their feet on beginners mode on a dancing machine. the more agressive plays can burn energy on heavy mode.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?
Probably not officially, but it definately has the capability to evolve into an even bigger trend. It is gaining popularity as it is, right? And they're are always new people trying this game out. The community is growing, so maybe we'll eventually be able to get something together.

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?
That'd be so goddamn hot. We could call it.... Teen Girl Squad.

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?

Powerade biggrin.gif The red kind. I'm not too sure what it's called. But yeah. Lots and lots of powerade.

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play? Nope, just aim not to wear baggy pants, and no sweaters.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?
Ruckers in Kamloops, because its the only place in Kamloops that has DDR. Or at home, because I can.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?
Evening is fun, I think whenever I can get up there is good enough for me.

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?
I like getting high scores, so I guess i'd be all for PA.

13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of veterans?
If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?

I've only been playing for less than a year. My opinion of anyone better than me, well, I respect them a lot. And the newbs, I pretty much feel i'm glad I'm not them biggrin.gif And I'll never ever lose to them. Although that's not always the case.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?
Dona doesn't like it when we bring food or drink past the tables. But that's about it. happy.gif otherwise the staff is great.

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?
umm. see above.

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?
Little kids who go "Oh I can do that." And then they never get their buttocks up on the dance pads. Or the kids who don't know how to wait their turn to play. That's about it.

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?
Well, I mean, its a family arcade, there's nothing really that you can do.

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?
it brings people together because they enjoy it. parents watching their kids certainly get a kick out of watching people play it too biggrin.gif

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?
generation gap?

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?it's a good concept I suppose. People invested in it, saw it was popular, other arcades did the same?

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced? No idea. By the time I started playing they already had 8th mix (I think they started with 3rd?)

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own? Konamix, DDRMAX, DDRMAX2 and Extreme

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?
T.T no. I have soft pads. and they... they... they are okay. I guess.
16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?

Yes, it was fantastic. My first tournament I got second. I never expected to do so well! The tournament after that I got first and then I was like.. ego tripping. It felt so good to (at least think) that I was one of the best players in Kamloops.

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?
At Ruckers.

17c) How are tournaments started? They notify people who play regularly, then they put up posters advertising it. And then other players encouraged people to join, and then big BANG.

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?
I'd like to see ddr become something a little bit bigger. biggrin.gif That's about it.

1) What is your name?
Kristina Werdenberg

2) How old are you?
19

3) How long have you been playing DDR and how/when was it first introduced to you?
Since I was 15. My friends were obsessed with it and I tried it when I tagged along to the arcade with them.

4) How much money do you believe you spend weekly on DDR?
None. E4.gif My sister pays for my DDR.

5) What are your likes / dislikes regarding DDR?
I love the excercise and it's just fun. There's also a nifty social aspect that goes along with it, I've found. =D Also, it motivates me to get up from just sitting in front of the computer all day when I'm not at school. lol I don't like the getting all sweaty.

6) If you could change anything about the game, what would you change?
I'd put more j-pop and anime songs in it. =D

7) For what reasons do you play DDR (entertainment, exercise, ect.)?
Entertainment

8) What, in your opinion, are the main draws of DDR?
It's fun and it burns calories! E4.gif There's such diversity in those that play as well.

9) Do you believe DDR will ever become a sport?
Realistically, no. Ideally, yes. lol But to all of the competative DDR players, it already is a sport. =D

9b) What is your opinion on the attempted formation of a DDR league?
I see nothing wrong with it. I actually think it's a pretty cool idea.

10) Is there a particular drink or food product that you usually consume when playing DDR?
Water, gatorade, and propel. I normally don't eat while I play, although after, I usually get a burger at Denny's. (Arcade then Denny's is a tradition =D)

10b) Are any particular clothes / shoes that you wear for DDR play?
I normally wear tight jeans, but to play DDR, I try to wear my looser jeans as tight ones tend to feel sticky and feel like they're not fitting right. For shoes, I wear my white Adidas if I'm wearing a light colored shirt and my black Sugar (some weird brand from Hot Topic) shoes with dark shirts. I actually go and buy tennis shoes with DDR in mind, testing the traction in the store and trying on both shoes in the store and jogging in place to test their lightness. Sugar shoes are actually lighter than Adidas, which was the shoe I used to prefer until I found my Sugars.

11) Where do you usually play DDR and why do you usually play at this location?
Ray's Game Center in San Diego, CA. I play here because the arcade usually isn't too busy and it has In the Groove. I occassionally play at the Clairemont Mesa Boomer's and when I lived in LA, I went to the Family Fun Arcade and to Sherman Oaks Castle Park.

12) Is there a particular time of day you prefer to play on, and if so, why?
In the evening. It's cooler.

12b) Is there a particular style of play you prefer (pa, freestyle, ect.), and if so why?
Um.. Freestyling to me wastes energy. Truthfully, I don't have the skills to do it. =p I tend to just try to full combo. I great attack a lot on accident, I'm getting better at PAing. =D So yeah.. I guess I go for PA.

13) If you are a new player to this game, what is your opinion of veterans?
If you are a veteran, what is your opinion of newer players?

I really have no opinion. I was once a new player too. I always do my best to encourage them and to help them out if they're serious about the game.

14) Have you ever encountered any problems with owners of the game (an angry arcade manager for example)?
Nope. Not a one. I'm a good girl. 0=)

14b) If so, what sparked the problem and how was (or wasn't) the problem resolved?
N/A

14c) Have you ever encountered any problems with other players, or with onlookers?
I haven't, but my group at the time (Sherman Oaks Castle Park group) has some major beef with JSB. Lol. His group and mine almost got into huge fight. lol I generally don't have problems with people in general. 0=)

14d) If so, what caused the problem and how was (or wasn't) it resolved?
Oops.. I think I kinda of answered this one in the previous question. Kinda.

15) What affect(s) do you believe DDR has on the arcade environment?
I think it actually draws more people into the arcade. That's probably why DDR machines are generally located near the entrance. The heavy players look skilled so onlookers stop and watch. Some go into the arcade and play. Some even try the game. DDR increases business.

15b) What do you think caused the affect(s)?
The skilled players. I keep answering the questions before they're asked. lol

15c) How did DDR become so widespread amongst arcades?
Because it's fun. Plain and simple. That and players who grew highly skilled at the game lured in other people to play the game who eventually became skilled themselves. Chain reaction. E4.gif

15d) When was DDR first introduced to your local arcade and why/how was it introduced?
DDR was introduced at Starworks Arena in Mission Valley mall about the summer of 2001. No idea how/why it was introduced. it was a 2nd mix machine though. =D

16) Do you own a copy of DDR and if so, which versions do you own?
I own the DDR USA playstation version. I rarely play at home though. I prefer the arcade environment.

16b) Also, do you own any metal pads, and if so, have you ever had any problems with them?
Nope. Official Konami soft pad. Never used. Won it from the Konami booth at Comic-Con

16c) Was the problem fixable? If so, did you make the repairs yourself or did someone else?
N/A

16d) How much did the repairs cost?
N/A

16e) Which companies do you recommend for purchasing metal pads and why?
Kobalt Flux... because every says they're damned good and I've never heard of them having problems. I don't know if I answered this correctly. lol

17) Have you ever been to a tournament, and if so what was it like?
I've been to a tournement, but haven't been in one. It was fun and there was a great competative atmophere. Loved it and I met so many cool people. =D

17b) Where are tournaments usually held?
Arcades? >.>

17c) How are tournaments started?
Absolutely no idea.

17d) What are the general rules for tournaments, and do they vary between locations?
Again, no idea.

17e) How do you score freestyle play?
Um....

17f) Do arcade owners encourage/discourage tournaments?
Again... um...

18) Are you aware of any cross-cultural effects between the US and other countries (such as Japan, European Countries, ect.)?

19) Would you consider DDR a trend? (Why or why not)
In some ways it is, but it's not something that people start doing to mimic another person. They do it because it seems fun to them. Actually, some people are afraid to start playing because they're so self concious of what they'd look like to other people. Once they get over it though, it's all about fun. =D

20) What did DDR originate from?
Not a clue. lol

21) Have you ever been injured as a result of DDR?
I fell off the pad once and nearly broke my ankle. >.>

22) Are there any other comments/ thoughts/ questions/ ideas, which you would like to add?
Hm.... I'd like to read the final product. =D
