JudgeWindowSecondsGreat=0.108333
JudgeWindowSecondsMarvelous=0.016666
JudgeWindowSecondsMine=0.108333
JudgeWindowSecondsOK=0.250000
JudgeWindowSecondsPerfect=0.033333

I'm wondering where some of these "frame-rate based numbers" came from.

Marvelous makes sense (1/60 = 0.01666...)
Perfect makes sense (2/60 = 0.03333...)
Great seems a bit weird (0.108333... would 6.5/60; kind of strange they'd base it on frame rate & then do a half-frame instead of a whole)
Good seems a bit weird (0.158333... would be 9.5/60)
Boo seems a bit weird (0.191666... would be 11.5/60) and also huge as many have remarked on.

So I'm wondering, where did 6.5 frames come from for Great, 9.5 frames come from for Good, and 11.5 frames come from for Boo?

I was intrigued by a post that posted this alternative:

Marvelous = same as above (1 frame, 0.01666...)
Perfect = same as above (2 frames, 0.03333...)
Great = 4 frames, 0.06666...
Good window = 5 frames, 0.08333...
Boo window = 8 frames, 0.13333...

That seems more plausible, and upon testing it feels a bit more accurate, but it raises the question of where those numbers came from, too.

Can anybody find any of this in an authoritative source?

Maybe the Great/Good/Boo values vary in some versions & that's why there've been two different sets of numbers presented?

according to my knowledge

marvelous = within 1/64 of beat
perfect = " "1/32 beat
great= " "1/16th beat
good = " "1/8th beat
boo = " "1/4th beat

convert this to how it relates to the frame rate based numbers between one arrow and the next.

if the window = 1 then the respective framerates relative to DDR would be something like this:

marvelous=0.015625 (1/64)
perfect=0.03125 (1/32)
great=0.0625 (1/16)
good=0.125 (1/8)
boo=0.25 (1/4)

just outta curiousity try that...

Here's a spreadsheet I made showing the various timing windows from Stepmania (for each of its Judge settings), DDR, and ITG.

Sources of information:

DDR Arcade theory 1:

JudgeWindowScale=1.000000
JudgeWindowSecondsAttack=0.135000
JudgeWindowSecondsBoo=0.191666

JudgeWindowSecondsGreat=0.108333
JudgeWindowSecondsMarvelous=0.016666
JudgeWindowSecondsMine=0.108333
JudgeWindowSecondsOK=0.250000
JudgeWindowSecondsPerfect=0.033333

DDR Arcade theory 2:

kmoyGTI wrote:
Aren't the timing windows for the 8th Mix Arcade:
Marvelous window = 1/60 of a second
Perfect window = 2/60 of a second
Great window = 4/60 of a second
Good window = 5/60 of a second
Boo window = 8/60 of a second

So wouldn't it make sense for the timing windows to be:
JudgeWindowScale=1.000000
JudgeWindowBooSeconds=0.133333
JudgeWindowGoodSeconds=0.083333
JudgeWindowGreatSeconds=0.066667
JudgeWindowMarvelousSeconds=0.016667
JudgeWindowOKSeconds=0.250000
JudgeWindowPerfectSeconds=0.033333

As you can see, Theory 1 and Theory 2 have the same Marvelous and Perfect windows, but they diverge widely from there. Personally, I think Theory 2 makes a lot more sense and feels a lot more accurate... nobody needs or wants Boo windows of a full one-fifth of a seconds, which Theory 1 would have you believe is correct.

In The Groove:

Syncognition wrote:
JudgeWindowScale=1.000000
JudgeWindowSecondsAttack=0.135000
JudgeWindowSecondsBoo=0.180000
JudgeWindowSecondsGood=0.135000
JudgeWindowSecondsGreat=0.102000
JudgeWindowSecondsMarvelous=0.021500
JudgeWindowSecondsMine=0.070000
JudgeWindowSecondsOK=0.320000
JudgeWindowSecondsPerfect=0.043000

ITG timing windows :0)

And of course, the names in ITG are different: Fantastic, Excellent, Great, Decent, and Way Off. But the concepts are the same.

Stepmania values:

These were easy to get. BTW, these all assume you haven't modified your Stepmania.ini. These are the default values for the various Judge settings.

Here's how you get these...

1. Look at the default window values in Stepmania.ini:

JudgeWindowSecondsMarvelous=0.022500
JudgeWindowSecondsPerfect=0.045000
JudgeWindowSecondsGreat=0.090000
JudgeWindowSecondsGood=0.135000
JudgeWindowSecondsBoo=0.180000

Those are in seconds, of course. Multiply by 1000 (move the decimal three places to the right) to get milliseconds.

2. Multiply them by the JudgeWindowScale for that particular Judge setting. Here they are:

Judge1 = X 1.5
Judge2 = X 1.33
Judge3 = X 1.16
Judge4 = X 1
Judge5 = X 0.84
Judge6 = X 0.66
Judge7 = X 0.5
Judge8 = X 0.33
JUSTICE = X 0.2 (ouch)

My spreadsheet does all the multiplication automatically because it's awesome.

Right, this post is gonna seem completely out of place, but here goes. I'm looking for the EM2 window timings and the increase of judge difficulty on Standard mode and Nonstop mode. Any ideas/links? Thanks!

@the_lone_psycho

For EM2 Timings use EXTREME Timing and set it to Judge 5.
What do you mean with increase of judge difficulty in these game modes? do you mean the lifebar?

I think so erm.gif . All I know is that as you progress through the stages, hitting perfects/greats gets harder and if you fluff a step, you loose more health. Thanks for the timing info!

I don't know about the config, but the Arcade can be setup up to 8 different difficulties about lifebar. Our EM2 is set to the easiest and it's much easier than Stepmania.

Your lifebar has no bearing on the timing. Lifebar difficulty just means how much life is drained for a step below Good or an N.G.

I think this would go here, so would anyone happen to know how to change the timing windows in StepManiaX to the 8th mix ones. The coding is different so I was just wondering if anyone knows how to do it. Thanks for any help.

Im going to assume this sort of question would fall in this catagory.

I accidently moved my ITG1 folder into my songs folder while the global offset was -0.072 (Cobalt Flux) and when I went to change it back to 0.000 The ITG1 folder completely went offsync while the DDR folders remained sync'd.

completely uninstalling SM (Every bit of it) and retrying but still the ITG1 sims are offbeat and im positive they were all originally sync'd correctly... because on -0.072 I can play it fine on the keyboard, but then DDR is off and I couldn't play ITG on foot.

what is going on!

I was wondering how much I would need to modify the timing to have timing configuration(s) that are accurate, but also deal with the adapter delay that are plauging my pad Stepmania playing?

I have an actual Stepmania cabinet (set up on an old Solo 2000) and I followed the instructions, trying the framerate based option for Extreme timing and I must say that I find the timing to be far too easy. (I went and played on a DDR machine just half an hour after playing on my cabinet and my PA was completely owned.) I'm going to try the "actual" DDR Extreme timings now...

PS Dawgbowl, this thread is moreso focused on discussing how to set up Stepmania so that it performs like specific games - DDR Extreme, ITG 2, etc. if you want general support/help I suggest trying a different thread or possibly making your own.

Edit:

Does it matter what the judge is set on when you use these various timings, or will it automatically override that? It's my understanding that it doesn't matter what judge you have it one when you change the timing windows, but if you change the judge after that, then it will reset it to whatever timing windows are used for the judge difficulty. Is that correct?

//Aside: It would be interesting if someone could post PIU/EZ2Dancer timing windows, (PIU moreso) I'd be curious to see how they measure up. (Seriously, PIU feels like about judge 4 on SM)

Edit:

Tried the tighter timing windows...still doesn't seem quite right...then again maybe timing seems a little easier because I'm using a 27" flat screen/backgrounds turned off/can play at a more comfortable speed on any song. I really dunno...I don't want to screw up my timing XD

Did a little test with Ba Kwo heavy today using judge difficulties 4-justice and also two different sets of numbers that are supposedly different timing theories for DDRExtreme. (One of them is based on framerates and the other is actually ripped off the DDRExtreme disk, apparently)

Ba Kwo heavy:

(Forgive me for not writing down the marvs, if you want to know, just check the stepchart and you'll see how many total steps there are and you'll be able to figure it out anyway)

Judge 4: 12 perfects
Judge 5: 20 perfects
Judge 6: 41 perfects and 1 great
Judge 7: 65 perfects and 5 greats
Judge 8: 89 perfects, 41 greats, 4 goods and 1 miss
Justice: 74 perfects, 78 greats, 9 goods, 1 Boo and 14 misses

DDR Extreme timing based on framerate: 23 perfects
DDR Extreme timing based on rip from disk: 34 perfects

In my opinion, both DDR Extreme timing windows are a little too generous, it seems a lot easier to me to than it should be.

There are, however, some factors that bring my point of view into doubt:

I have the machine set up exactly to my preference; the pad sensitivity, distance between the machine and the pad, screen is nice and clean and has recently been fixed so that it's actually the quality it should be - the reason it looked like crap before was because the video settings were on component as opposed to S-video. XD I'm also playing in a relatively quiet, secluded dark room that's fairly cool, so it's about ideal in terms of concentration as well.

Any thoughts?

Probably the same as Extreme's.

I found some stuff that's actually in the ITG 2 stepmania.ini - it helps to avoid pad boos and mines triggering too easily, I think:

PadStickSeconds=0.050000

This is also in the .ini, I've been told it is apparently to make up for the transition between pad and keyboard or something. (aka it's intended for use if you have SM hooked up to a pad)

JudgeWindowAdd=0.001500

No. The perfect window is smaller. And the grading is different. I don't know about the marvelous though.

AA's % was booted up to a 95.

Also, someone PM me if we get the metrics for SN. I need to increase my MA/PA cuz it sucks horribly.
