What the hell is up with the chorus in Utopia Expert? It sounds like Foy tried to sync the steps to that wavy synth in the background, but even then the steps don't really go. It's the strangest frick chart ever, but yet there are some who can still ace it.

Those of you who can, how do you follow that part of the song? Do you just block out the music entirely and envision the rhythm as you step, or can you actually tie the steps to the actual synth to some degree?

It's actually one my my favorite charts for some reason.
At that part, ignore the music and try to align yourself with the notes. It's probably the hardest part in the song.

Actually, the only steps that do NOT go with anything are the orange 32nd steps. Some people will tell you that if you listen hard enough they go with something. I've charted the sheet music to this song, and they don't. Everything else goes with at least some part of the music, however; and this is almost always something in the background.

My advice, in addition to what the previous poster said about ignoring the music at that point, is to go into Stepmania or the home version of ITG and listen to the assist ticks to that part of the song. It seems really weird at first, but eventually that part becomes very easy (and very fun) to play. biggrin.gif

sup shewn

I actually do listen to the music during that part of the song, but I only vaguely follow the music when I step to it. It's not so bad, though I imagine it must be hell for people who are actually good at FA. I've always meant to write an edit for Utopia to "fix" that part of the song.

I've heard it affectionately referred to as "the beatmania part."

Julian could ace it.

Some of you may know who I'm talking about.

Just shut up and play the song. You'll get it eventually. It makes sense after a while. Or something.

Utopia ex. is one of my favorite stepcharts. For the 1 footed part, just practice it alot, and you'll get the hang of it. It does sort of actually go to the music if you do it right erm.gif

what i have done to get it is play it a few times on stepmania. with that part memorized, i completely ignore the music, and most of the time, i get excs or fan. on it. hope that works

Actually, no it's not. It's a petulant dismissal in lieu of real advice.

Real advice includes tips and informational suggestions.

That one simply dismissed the question and essentially said "Figure it out yourself." Really helpful.

Nice vid. Is it normal to hit the last freeze with your hand? I've never seen that before.

"Just shut up and play the song. You'll get it eventually. It makes sense after a while."

I stand by my statement that this is the best advice. You will get it eventually and it will start to make sense if you just keep playing. Asking people on a forum how do do such an obscure and complicated rhythm that nobody can map out off the top of their heads is just wishful thinking that a couple people on a forum can just give this guy the "correct" way to do it. It similar to all the redundant "how do I increase my stamina" threads, its not something you ask people on a forum and they can give you the magic key to unlock stamina, its as simple as play a lot, excersise, eat right, etc.... obvious stuff.

Same with Utopia. The people who don't have problems with it are the people that practiced it and got it right. it WILL start to make sense if you just keep playing and practicing it yourself, as it will come very naturally. this is the best way to learn it.

Perhaps I can make my point clearer, Asymptote.

Suggesting that the person listen to the song played with the assist ticks on so he can hear the rhythm of that section is advice.

Posting a video of someone playing the song so the person can see how it looks when it's played properly is a form of advice.

Telling the person to ignore the music at the section because the odds are good it will hinder your playing rather than help it for that section is advice. And good advice, at that.

Telling someone to just play a song - something they're clearly going to do anyway - until they figure it out on their own is a meaningless suggestion, NOT advice.

There's already a thread for this.
Is Utopia (Expert) synchronized?
And it is sync-ed not to the music, but to sound effects.

Yeah, on page 5. If it's not within the 1st/2nd page or in a sticky, I find that posting a new thread couldn't hurt.

And it's more difficult when there are steps to a part of the song you can barely hear over the rest of the tracks.
