oh the irony... beside the fact that many koreans are good at DDR... To the question, I love DDRing and just DDR'd last night and also use these terms everyday with my friends... good times

Right, but they probably refer to it as Dance dance revolution. Do you ever hear Korean kids telling their friends "Hey, let's go masturbate"? I think not!

Well, you could use any noun as a verb; it's not like the grammar police are going to find you and kick your ass.

Someone has obviously never met the grammer police ::points at Nyanko Pudding::

Considering that Korea is more well-known for good Pump It Up players, then maybe it isn't as farfetched as you think... (just kidding).

Almost everyone in the northwest uses it as a verb.

Let's go DDR.

I was DDRing the other day and..

ITG works in those situations too.

I always thought to myself how nearly any noun can be used as a verb in a way that people can still easily understand. I always thought that if there were a way of describing the definitions of such verbs, it would be something like the action of using the noun that the verb origonated from or the action of hitting a person or a thing with the object from which the verb origonates.

So DDRing is using DDR, or basically playing DDR. It doesn't fit very well because DDR itself is a game which doesn't really exist as an object but more of a concept or something.

A more fitting example is the noun calculator. Saying "I'm going to go calculator something." would mean either using the calculator for something like an equation or hitting something with the calculator.

The announcer person in the game says lets DDR. Thats a verb. If the game itself says its a verb then it cant not be. Even though I do agree it sounds stupid, but who cares. We should all use nouns as verbs. Yay confusion biggrin.gif

Just do it if you desire. Nothing particularly wrong with it. In fact, "DDR" has been assumed to be more of a slang term lately, anyway. And if the majority of people do it, the term can pretty much be considered slang as well.

That's probably why the announcer says it, most likely inspired by how many people who have been using it that way.

agreed, but better taste than pointless arguments about grammar. everybody knows ddr can't acutally be used as a verb, but honestly who cares? language isn't about strict rules; it's about usage. for instance, take the sentence "harry and david hit the ball to bob and me." now, that's the correct form, but most people would say "harry and david hit the ball to bob and I." considering the percentage of people that say the latter instead of the former, I expect within the next ten years or so, the rule will be revised. lanugage constantly changes, and it's due to how it's spoken. while you may think that rules define the language, it is not nearly the case. rules may restrict the boundaries of a language, but if enough people begin speaking it differently, the rules will give.

edit: heh...i just looked back in the posts and i think you said something very similar haha

Dont see how DDR can be a verb. The second Dance and Revolution in the acronym DDR kinda destroy this idea, sadly. who needs proper english? Hardly anybody uses it anymore... Youll still A songs without using good grammer.

Those are all nouns can be verbs instead when it's convenient for them to be. They're just simpler and more appealing than "I paddle a kayak," "I dance the samba," "I ride a go-kart," "I go on vacation," and "I do the tango."
