For all the complaining about how we should be nice to newbs, I sure don't see a lot being done about it.
Here's the reason I'm mean to newbs, or anyone else for that matter:
When you act stupid, expect to be treated as such. Where's the motivation for a newb to start spell-checking and using correct grammar if no one gets on their case about it? Seriously, without the people who laugh at others for spelin like dis, evry1 wood spel like dis.
Granted, it's not too nice to blatantly attack a newbie without proper justification. Generally, the only reason newbies are flamed more often is because they tend to not know or care about the rules, so we laugh at them. If Julie Q didn't read or care about the rules and couldn't spell, I'd laugh at her too.
EDIT: Just noticed that I spelled "complaining" wrong. Oh, the irony. |
If the person acts that way, how will they learn? If I asked "What does DDR mean" and someone replied "OMFG!!11 U r posting on this site and you don't know wut it meanz!? Ur a homo!" , then I would not have learned anything, and I might not like this site anymore. Some of u people being retards to newbies are slowly killing the new DDRfreak community (I mean the new members). Hope people look at it a different way when your done reading this.

His point was not that we should flame noobs simply for their ignorance about the game (e.g. asking what ddr is) but that there is a justification for being curt with someone if they demonstrate a lack of respect for established conventions and ideals that they have already observed and internalized. After all, how else would they learn that what they are doing isn't the norm if we didn't tell them?
And that much I agree with. I think that it is often appropriate to tell new players that they aren't playing the game properly, or that they aren't putting their coin in the coin line properly, or whatever the case may be. However, it's *never* acceptable to be rude to a player in that situation, especially a newb who is very impressionable on what the DDR community is like. What are you accomplishing by being rude to them? You're *maybe* getting your point across, but pissing them off and leaving them with a bad taste in their mouth for the game of DDR.
You might as well be nice to them, gently point out their mistakes and hell, maybe make a new friend in the process. After all, why go to an arcade to play DDR if not to interact on some level with other people? Besides, they'll feel better about DDR and will likely continue to play (without making their noobish mistake again) if you treat them with respect instead of with condescention. |

Although you may play one way, someone else may play differently. Everyone has their own method of playing. I think its perfectly fine to make suggestions to newer players. But not tell them how to play. A friend of my is way better than me (he has over 100 heavy AAA's and I only have 10). When he plays he lifts his feet at least 1' (one foot) off of the pad while I only lift my foot about 2 inches.
Basically the whole message of this thread is "STOP FLAMING"
Flaming is just as much a violation of the forum rules as any other rule. Think about it... what are you trying to prove to a newb when telling them:
"READ THE RULES YOU F*CKING DUMB BUTTOCKS!!!!"
Also, I think that we should get rid of the word "nOOb" or any of the like.
We should change this to something a little more motivating or at less deragatory.
Something like Beginner, or novice (like on ITG2). If it were me just starting out, I would prefer to be called a novice.

In my view, this forum doesn't even have a flaming problem. If anything, we just have a minor psuedo-mod problem. Many think they can micromanage and rule over this threads, and that translates to a neverending slew of corrections in newb threads. I smell a distinct vibe of superiority, but not aggression.
In other words, get over yourselves people. |

Seriously, some of you guys take this way too seriously, and it's good if you're competitive, but you don't have to be assholes about it.
Seriously, guys. Read before you post, ignore the trolls, PLEASE try to use decent spelling and grammar, be nice -- is that too much to ask on this fine intarweb? |
