Why did DDR lose so much popularity in Japan?

I think something that's bringing down the popularity of DDR fiercely in US and maybe even Japan is just the fact that a new AC DDR hasn't been released in so long.

I started on 3rd Mix and I started to get a little bored of DDR by the time MAX came out, then I actually played MAX and loved DDR again and then MAX2 came out. Extreme was the icing on the cake, but there's only so many times you can hear A, V, Sync, Rhythm and Police, etc. before you wish they'd release almost anything, as long as it had different songs.
