I have to agree with you on most of what you said, but I do have a statement.
I'm sure we can all agree, there's nothing wrong with enjoying a game, but 'living' it is a different thing. It's easy to see when someone's unbalanced though when you see them rip a game a new one, and then try almost any other game and not fair half as well at it, but what does that have to say about other things in the person's life? |
i have class in the mornings and another an hour later. During that time period i often go to the arcade to play and there is this person who is always there. when he fails a song he drops down and starts weeping "I'm supposed to be better then this, why am i not good"
and i'm in total shock but what can i say?
All it takes is some will power and a bit of control to keep things balanced
those don't have it, it's just too bad, what can you do? _________________

Point in case: MMORPG's detract from social skills, they give you no excorcise, they sap your energy away (the events make you think you've done more than you have -- read up on it, it makes you think you're tired. true with many games), mmorpg's cost a monthly fee; on the otherhand, DDR has a real community of real people, so you can develop real relationships that usually extend past DDR, dance is an art, dance is also excercise, and if you buy the home version, you pay for about 2 monthos of MMORPG play, and get as much play as you want, forever. The end. |
Ever heard of a fellow named Yantis?
Learn more about MMORPGs. There are more then a thousand full time Everquest players (or were - I here the Norrath Economy went south), making incomes which range from $30,000-$40,000 a year to well over $300,000 a year.
In Korea, pro-circuit players can make as much money as proffessional athletes in America. The income bracket depends on the MMORPG and other factors, such as command of the economy, popularity/dedication and most importantly MUDflation.
I would recommend reading Economics Journals, Everquest (probably the second strongest economy in the MMORPG world) was once ranked as having the 77th strongest GNP in the world.
For reference, try this article: http://cactus.eas.asu.edu/partha/Columns/2002/02-11-everquest.htm
Excerpted:
Economy is where fantasy meets reality, the Norrathian economy does have its relationship to what we Earthlings call money. As one plays the game of Everquest, one gets to collect many an artifact and coins. These have value in Norrath using a2n trading, but they have more value on Earth using a2a trading. For example, if you really want a Crafted Velium Warsword (and could not find one), you can get it from an avatar who has one, in exchange for some real dollars. You find such a real person, and decide the price using many auction sites, such as Ebay.
Depending upon supply and demand at any time, the prices of these artifacts varies and are priced in real US dollars. With data collected in samples from many web based auction sites, Professor Castranova estimates that the goods traded constitutes a GNP for Norrath of $135 million, making it the 77th richest country in our world (about the same as Russia). The per-capita GNP is $2,226 placing it higher than China or India.
The income of people collecting treasures in Norrath, i.e. the amount of money you can make by playing the game, is about $3.42/hour, far exceeding the cost you have to pay to Sony. Using the economic model, we find that the Norrathian currency, the PP is valued at about $0.01, higher than the Japanese Yen. Like on Earth, there is a great divide between the rich and the poorsome folks have amassed huge values in Norrathian wealth while many have very little. |

Just as SPF5.Kiba recommended to SilverFox, I am going to recommend to you: Go learn more about gyms. If you THINK you can come close to getting the same type of workout, same type of specific body sculpting, same type of fitness workout by stomping on arrows, then you obviously are too inexperienced and closed minded to understand why gyms have been in existence far beyond the time span that DDR has graced the entertainment market.
What you just said is like comparing riding a bicycle to work every morning rather than driving because it only costs 50¢ to fill up the tires with air, and you get just as much of a workout doing it depending on how fast you go. Wow. _________________

I'm with Xiayu on that one. In fact, you could spend LESS money going to a gym and having a full-body workout than paying a large amount of money at the arcade, on a LOT of cheap pads(unless you mod your pad or something), or a mediocre Ignition, or the RedOctane Metal/Cobalt Flux pads and only work your legs. _________________

Now that's ambition, when you've AAAA'ed Legend Road I'll buy you your own DDR machine, promise.
As for me, my goals aren't quite so high, I want to be able to pass every song on Heavy and Double and get some good AA's and some AAA's.
Passing a few Oni's would be nice, too. _________________

If you sweat THAT much from just one game of DDR, then maybe something is wrong. Besides, I'm with Xiayu on this. As much as I love the game of DDR, if I'm going to be working out, I'm going to be in a gym or somewhere I can work my entire body. DDR is great cardio and could be similar to running on a treadmill, but it doesn't do SQUAT for your upper body (even if you bar-rape). I'm not saying that DDR isn't exercise, but don't expect it to be the miracle worker that GetUpMove.com makes it out to be. (Actual results may vary. Void where prohibited.) There are many other cheaper and probably more effective ways to tone your body, so the exercise argument shouldn't be the dominant reason for playing. _________________

You young guys take this whole gym thing way too seriously. Many people prefer a more casual form of exercise and it has been proven that people stick with their exercise routines longer if they are having FUN-so in those respects ddr fits the bill nicely. Some people are only looking for an aerobic workout or the motivation and light exercise that leads to weight loss-many people have found just that through ddr. So for those not into the buffed out gym type work out ddr is just right.

FACT: 64% of America is overwieght today (statistic source is MSN.com)
Now, if you are going to tell me that you base YOUR HEALTH stirctly on FUN and FRIENDLINESS, then you don't care about life too much in my opinion.
For one, depending on what gym you go to, it can either be a meat market or a snobbish antisocial club, but either way you should be in the gym for one reason, YOUR HEALTH.
I know this doesn't go for everyone, but that's exactly how I take DDR. If I go to an arcade to play DDR, I'm going to play DD freaking R. I'm not there for much anything else.
Gyms do cardio/aerobics, muscle building, muscle toning, the list goes on and on. DDR does SWEAT/cardio.
I'm not trying to start some Pro Gym/Con DDR debate...that's DDR Mom's target. I'm just saying that it sounds like certain people's focus on WHY to do things in society today is completely screwed up.
:: points at the 64% obese statistic ::
Okay so maybe we don't fall into that statistic, but I don't think most of us will be playing DDR by age 40, and after that it sounds like all your FUN is going to stop once you have to find new/different ways to take care of yourself.
Oh, and don't waste your time posting about "I'm not 40 yet so I don't care.", because you WILL be one day, and that's what I'm pointing out for you. You may be young and enjoying life, but that doesn't mean you should neglect looking ahead. Otherwise you might as well drop out of school, leave home now and proceed to live the exciting and fun life that you have planned out for tomorrow while you still know EVERYTHING. _________________

I've got to go against you there...only because (and I'm not going to be scientific into this since I don't really feel like looking crap up) I have "trained" my body into sweating at the slightest exertion, and it's all due to the mountain bike racing ( I was sweating during a race where it was snowing and about 10 degrees)...basically I can sweat more after a 4 song round that I would pumping iron at the gym (and since I'm an endurance athlete, I see no point in lifting weights) granted those 4 songs would have to total about 2000 steps (lets say HVAM, so deep, ps, and max300) but still someone who has been playing a lot has probably experienced something similar where they sweat right away. and a lot of factors go into it...our arcade has no cooling systems as far as I know, I'm sure that contributes a lot...
or I could have just said that blade might be more geared towards endurance and sweats easily... _________________

That's exactly how I am. Sometimes i barely even play, and yet I sweat more than i should. I used to think it was really weird until i read this....At least I know I'm not the only one..... _________________

Well thanks alot for those who replied. This was not meant as a post to shoot at PC at all. I know a couple people there, and they are all right. And back in the day when some came to hyperspace, they gaveme pointers and said that I was crazy for as many songs as I did in a row. I was legitimatly curious as to the reasons for playing ddr and had an interesting read. I mean you would think im weird for the vomiting and aerobic routines I do to wrestle if I did not have a serious reason. Thanks Alot all take care _________________

Oh, excuse me, but DDR Mommie, it would be easier to shoot down my arguments if you aimed first. The only reason why you say you are in fairly good shape is because you know I'm not going to talk about you, but if I were to be my usual picky self, you wouldn't be too pleased with what you hear. _________________

I play because it keeps me in shape
Its fun, cool, and a way to give me self esteem. I love entertaining the crowds and motivating other people to play. Its not a way of life its a short term goal that's fun and a good way to prevent boredom. I've met new friends and things couldn't have been better. DDR is a teens answer forget about the stress in their life |

Well, even so....Sweating doesn't mean much other than your body is keeping itself cool. I personally sweat buckets, but it takes me two or three rounds before I start. But I'm also not the silly fool to play three flashing 10's in my first set. I like to warm up before I decide to tear into those songs. But let's say I did Legend Road (and fail like I always do), you can bet your buttocks I'd be sweating. But not from just ONE game of DDR (as stated by the 50 cents previously mentioned by someone). _________________
